Our Response
Derry City and Strabane District Council declared a climate emergency in 2019, followed by the 2020 Climate Pledge to achieve a net-zero, climate-resilient City and District by 2045. The Strategic Growth Plan envisions a thriving, prosperous, and sustainable City and District with equal opportunities for all.
We are integrating the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals into our efforts. These 17 goals tackle global challenges such as poverty, inequality, climate change, and environmental degradation, providing a framework for sustainable development that balances economic, environmental, and social priorities while meeting present needs and safeguarding the future.
The Council has established several working groups and initiatives to address the climate and ecological crisis, including:
Climate Adaptation Plan
The Climate Change Adaptation Plan sets out our vision for a resilient council prepared for the effects of climate change. It outlines our vision and strategic priorities for adaptation action across Council over the next 5 years.
The Plan was developed as part of the CLIMATE Project funded by the EU Northern Periphery & Arctic Programme in collaboration with partners from Climate Northern Ireland and Climate Ireland.
