The Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council Cllr Lilian Seenoi Barr has launched a Young Person’s Bursary aimed at providing support to a local organisation through the provision of a bursary of a maximum of £500 to provide support for the growth and development of children and/ or young people, particularly those from low income and /or socially disadvantaged/ vulnerable background, living in the Derry City and Strabane Council area.
The Mayor, speaking at the launch of the programme, said she was keen to reach out to young people living in the Council and provide some financial assistance to organisations who provide support to disadvantaged young people with their personal and social development.
She said: “The purpose of the Young Person’s Bursary is to reach out to young people in our communities and provide some support to build on their inter personal and confidence skills. Engaging with young people and empowering them with the skills to cope with the challenges they face every day is a key focus of my Mayoral year and I am delighted to be in a position to offer this Bursary, It will help support confidence building and assist in developing the skills required to live learn and earn, as well as develop their personal and social developmental skills whilst encouraging them to become more involved in their local communities. It is hoped that the bursary will also help to develop skills and employability options as well as help develop their artistic and creative skills.
Mayor Barr encouraging organisations to apply for the bursary, said it is specifically targeted at organisations who support a child or young person aged from 0-18 years from disadvantaged backgrounds in the Council area.
The deadline for applications is 28th March 2025.
