SuperConnected Derry Strabane

Council offers free wi-fi in Derry and Strabane public buildings and town centres

Over 60 buildings through Derry City and Strabane District are offering free public Wi-Fi service following the successful roll out of Council’s new Public Building Wi-Fi Project, which was provided with the support from the Department of Culture, Media and Sport’s Urban Broadband Fund as part of the national Super Connected Cities campaign.

This is in addition to the Wireless City public wi-fi service that is available across both Derry City and Strabane offering free wi-fi to visitors and the general public.

The service which is a real success for both visitors to the city and the general public, offers the opportunity for them to get connected and access and share information about the city.

The Public Wi-Fi Project is available at many of the city’s busiest buildings including the Guildhall, Council Offices at Strand Road, Derry and Derry Road, Strabane, the Foyle Arena, the Alley Theatre, Templemore Sports Complex and Melvin Sports Centre.

The initiative is geared towards increasing digital engagement and energising cultural and economic activity within the city and is available for free public use, with the benefits of being easy to connect, filtered for user protection and scalable for future expansion.

ICT Manager with Derry City and Strabane District Council, Paul Jackson, explains: “Derry has already established itself as a city at the forefront of digital developments, and this further enhances our profile in terms of being a first rate provider of broadband services. The project has been a great success to date and people are really finding the service reliable, and very quick and convenient in terms of access.

He says Council is very much aware of the fact that one of the first questions tourists ask when visiting the city is, ‘Where can I get Internet access?’ It only takes one look at travel review websites to see how often the issue of problematic Internet access arises so Council were very keen to have Derry and Strabane area truly connected ahead of many other towns and cities in the region.”

The scheme allows people to enjoy one hour of free browsing per session, which means anyone with a phone, laptop or tablet just has to register to get instantly connected.

The Wireless City is available all across Derry including anywhere within the Walls and on the Walls, along the Quay from the Peace Bridge to Sainsbury’s, at Guildhall Square, Carlisle Road, Spencer Road, Clooney Terrace, Chapel Road, Ebrington Square and the Peace Bridge. While in Strabane, public wi-fi is available outside the Alley Theatre, Market Street, Castle Place, Castle Street, Abercorn Square, Main Street, Railway Street, Asda Car Park and the retail car park next to Asda.
