CATWALK DESIGNS, MATERIALS AND INSPIRATION!
1) DESIGN: WICKED WESTWOOD (WINNER OF NORTH REGION 2019)
Designer name: Lara-Jane Doherty
School: Scoil Mhuire, Buncrana
Inspiration: This couture inspired piece infuses Vivian Westwood and a Witch omen. The use of synthetic hair, blinds, pillowcases and a football lining were combined through hand styling, folding and sewing. This very much fits into a mystical folklore feel and is a significant example of recycling to create a red carpet couture look
2) DESIGN: SERENITY (WINNER OF NORTH REGION 2018)
Designer name: Rachel Irwin
School: City Armagh Highschool
Inspiration: Serenity, the Junk Kouture Northern Regional Winner, was inspired by the grief of losing a loved one. An old trampoline mat, flower stockings, and feathers tells this story through hand stitched embroidery and textile techniques.
3) DESIGN: THE ROLLING STONE (GRAND FINALIST 2019)
Designer name: George Houston
School: Scoil Mhuire, Buncrana
Inspiration: The design is inspired by 60s and 70s rock ’n roll artists like The Rolling Stones, David Bowie and Queen. All the outfit is exempt from glue and is 100% crafted. The music reflects my name The Rolling Stone. The trousers took 3 months to construct and the patterns on my jacket and jeans are my own. Reflection on the changing world of music by remembering the legends the designer was inspired by.
4) DESIGN: CHRYSALIS
Designer name: Mirren Mc Feely & Brodie Mc Feely
School: Loreto Secondary School, Letterkenny
Inspiration: Chrysalis was inspired by the frenzied activity of butterflies on a buddleia plant in our garden one glorious day last summer. We loved the metamorphosis from caterpillar to beautiful butterfly and wanted to capture this in our design, that from discarded, unlikely materials you could transform and create something unique.
5) DESIGN: PASSION FOR FASHION
Designer name: Emma Kelly & Hannah Gilmartin
School: Colaiste Cholmcille Ballyshannon
Inspiration: Passion for Fashion is a fun, fruity dress made entirely out of passion fruit skins – the designer collected these for nearly two years and the end result is a work of art and beauty.
6) DESIGN: WAVE AWAY WASTE
Designer name: Brid Mc Sharry
School: Colaiste Cholmcille, Ballyshannon
Inspiration: The skirt and halter top are made from crocheted plastic bags, while the headpiece is made from two old lampshades. The shoes are an old pair of heels that the designer upcycled by using hairnets, painted onion nets and plastic flowers. The designer lives on the Wild Atlantic Way coast and uses the beach regularly. It upsets her to see plastic and waste being washed up along the rocks and littering the natural landscapes. The use of plastic bags raises awareness to what people are doing to the ocean and the need for change.
