Home Accident Prevention

Derry City and Strabane District Councilโ€™s Home Safety Service focusses on home accident prevention for those Over 65, those who are vulnerable and families with children Under 5.

As part of our Service and in order to reduce accidents in the home, our Home Safety Officers undertake a home visits which last approximately 1 hour to provide practical advice and information and were possible equipment.  The visit will consider all areas of the home. 

Under 5 Visit

Some of the areas covered in an Under 5 visit include Fire Safety, Carbon Monoxide, Blind Cord Safety, Poisoning, Burns and Scalds and Choking.

Only families with children Under 5 who meet the eligibility criteria can avail of free equipment and the Home Safety Officer undertaking the visit will determine the equipment that is appropriate to provide at the time of the visit.

The eligibility criteria for families with children Under 5 includes receipt of benefits such as:

  • Income Support
  • Child Tax Credit
  • Disability Living Allowance/Personal Independence Payment
  • Job Seekers Allowance
  • Working Tax Credit
  • Housing Benefit
  • Free School Meals
  • Universal Credit.

Subject to availability the range of equipment we can provide to eligible families includes:

  • Cupboard Locks
  • TV and Furniture Straps
  • Carbon Monoxide Alarm
  • Table Edgeguard
  • Door Jammer
  • Blind Cord Safety Devices
  • Fireguard or Stairgate

Over 65 or Vulnerable Person's Visit

Some of the areas covered in an Over 65 or Vulnerable Person's visit include Falls Prevention, Fire Safety, Carbon Monoxide, Blind Cord Safety, Poisoning, Burns and Scalds and Choking.

All those receiving a visit can avail of free equipment and the Home Safety Officer undertaking the visit will determine the equipment that is appropriate to provide at the time of the visit.

Child Safety Week

Child Safety Week 2024 runs from Monday 3rd to Sunday 9th June. Child Safety Week is the Child Accident Prevention Trustโ€™s annual community education campaign, acting as a catalyst for thousands of safety conversations and activities UK-wide. The Trust help families build confidence and skills in managing the real risks to childrenโ€™s safety.
