The Derry Yank is a comedy drama set in modern day Derry. It's a play full of Derry humour, craic, banter, nostalgia and drama and deals with themes of friendship, betrayal, forgiveness and dealing with the past. It will be staged in Derry's Millennium Forum on Friday 27th and Saturday 28th June 2025 Martin Duffy returns to Derry from New York after an absence of 45 years to see his old friend Kieran McGowan and to deal with some issues from the past. And that's where it all kicks off...
Following its sell-out premiere run in May/June 2024, The Derry Yank is back in town.
Local writer, Eamonn Lynch's comedy/drama is full of Derry craic, tinged with poignant drama, as it deals with themes of homecoming, friendship, betrayal, forgiveness and the past.
It's a comedy/drama, with an emphasis on comedy and craic, though the dramatic scenes are extremely tense and emotional.
After 45 years in New York, Derry native Martin Duffy returns home, where he seeks out old friend Kieran McGowan to explain an act of betrayal in the hope of putting things right with his aul mucker. Adding an extra layer of depth and drama to the play is Kieran's friend Maggie Kelly, who, like Martin, has returned to Derry in recent years after many years away.
The play unravels and exposes the truth behind their respective homecomings to profound dramatic and emotional effect, guaranteeing the audience a roller-coaster ride, with surprising and shocking revelations that will strike a chord with the audience, especially those who have lived through the Troubles..
The Derry Yank stars three of Derry's finest actors - Gerry Doherty, Maeve Connelly and Pat Lynch - and is directed by acclaimed theatre professional Michael Poynor.
