Mayor encourages local businesses and groups to support Derry in the World Travel Awards
26 June 2023
The Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council has urged the local business community across the North West to support Derry in the upcoming World Travel Awards as it competes against other leading European cities.
In the running for ‘European’s Leading Festival & Events Destination’, Derry is up against leading European cities including Dublin, Cannes, Barcelona, Budapest, London, Munich, Venice and the Madeira Islands.
Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Cllr Patricia Logue, has urged all the local businesses within the city and region to get behind the campaign and show their support.
“We have an amazing business community here in Derry, with a huge range of remarkable independent businesses who all benefit greatly from the number of festivals throughout the year. Whether it’s hospitality or retail, people love to visit our city and enjoy the shopping, the food and overall atmosphere that our local businesses offer throughout the year.
“I would really encourage all our local businesses to show their support in the recent World Travel Awards nomination and urge all their staff and customers to go online and vote for Derry in the ‘Europe’s Leading Festival City’ category. We are up against some other fantastic cities in Europe and to get our Walled City on a global stage like this is just incredible. We need the support of everyone now to bring the title home.”
Mayor Logue also urged local community groups and organisations to get involved in the campaign, and encouraged schools, colleges and clubs to show their support.
“Our festivals and events wouldn’t be able to exist without the power of the people behind them. We have a vast array of talented community groups and schools who come together all year round to put on fantastic displays. I would love to encourage everyone of them to get behind the campaign of support and back Derry in the World Travel Awards.”
Aeidin McCarter, Head of Culture at Council, added: “Our business offering in the city is second to none, and is something we receive praise on when people visit our city and district over the year for our festivals. We not only offer world-class entertainment, but we also offer the best in hospitality, retail and tourism experiences. Now we need all those businesses to get on board and help us bring this fantastic achievement back to the city. We would be delighted if local businesses could show their support by encouraging their staff and customers to log on and vote in the awards.”
The landmark 30th anniversary awards will be staged in Batumi, Georgia on 30th September 202. The awards are drawn by public vote which can be done on the World Travel Awards website. Voting closes on 20th August 2023.
