18 December 2023
The Mayor of Derry and Strabane, Councillor Patricia Logue, has extended her congratulations to local Paralympic sprinter Jason Smyth, after he was inducted into the RTE Sport Hall of Fame.
He joined a whole host of sports stars, including Ireland rugby coach Andy Farrell, and gymnast Rhys McClenaghan, acknowledged this weekend for their outstanding achievements.
Jason Smyth retired this year having never lost a competitive Para Athletics event throughout his entire career, winning six Paralympic Championships. Since his retirement the Eglinton athlete continues to play a key role in sport in a managerial role with Paralympic Ireland supporting and inspiring the next generation of Irish stars.
Congratulating him on his outstanding achievement, Mayor Logue said: “I am absolutely delighted to see Jason Smyth receive this prestigious accolade. Jason has enjoyed an incredible career and has never allowed his disability to become a barrier to success. As an ambassador for sport Jason is truly inspirational and I know that his achievements will resonate with future generations of young local athletes.
“I would also like to wish Jason the very best in his latest challenge, as he competes in RTE’s Dancing with the Stars competition. He might have retired from the running track but Jason is really putting his agility skills to the test on the dance floor and we will all be cheering him on throughout the series.”
