Fabulous fireworks bring Strabane Halloween celebrations to an end

1 November 2024

The crisp Autumn evening provided the perfect setting for the fireworks extravaganza which brought the Halloween celebrations in Strabane to an end. Hundreds of people gathered at Melvin Running Track on Thursday evening where heads young and old turned skywards to enjoy the fabulous finale.

Visiting the town as the spooky fun got underway, the Mayor of Derry City and Strabane, Councillor Lilian Seenoi Barr said, “I am delighted to be in Strabane to take part in the Halloween celebrations. It is brilliant to see so many families out and about enjoying the great variety of performers and activities that are taking place. There are smiles and laughs everywhere I turn, and the fireworks at Melvin were the perfect end to an amazing Halloween.

“I want to acknowledge all the hard work that goes into making Halloween such a special occasion across the Strabane district. From schools, community organisations, charities, and businesses… so many people have their part to play in making Halloween happen. This is also an important time of year for local traders in Strabane and I hope they will all have experienced the benefits of the additional footfall in the town centre over the last few days.”

Throughout Halloween day spooky characters roamed around the Strabane streets bringing smiles and screams everywhere they went. From a prowling vampire to wacky witches, imposing dinosaurs to silly skeletons, along with street performers, storytellers and dance performances there was fun to be had around every corner.

On Castle Street the team from W5 wowed as they demonstrated some interactive science tricks. While over on Abercorn Square it was time for some Jurassic Encounters with the Roarsome Dinosaurs and their hatchings.

All afternoon children had the chance to meet the sister witches of The Coven, had a giggle with Funny Bones the silly circus skeleton, and got lost in a blizzard of colourful bubbles with Swirly McCauldron the enchanted Bubble Witch.

The Alley Theatre was a hive of fun throughout the day with families enjoying everything from Parky the Magician, Halloween Arts and Crafts to the Roarsome Interactive Play Village.

Throughout the days leading up to Halloween many families had also enjoyed visiting the popular Haybale Sculpture Trail – which covered the entire district from Bready to Castlederg where local communities once again helped to create awesome sculptures.
