Castlederg Public Realm marks new era for community space
12 November 2024
The community in Castlederg can now enjoy major enhancements of their town’s centre with the opening of the newly transformed Diamond Public Realm. The project is a key element of the Derg Active Project, a community-led initiative to revitalise Castlederg’s public spaces, aimed at fostering social connectivity, local business growth, and sustainability.
The opening was officiated by the Deputy Mayor of Derry City and Strabane, Alderman Darren Guy, who said he was honoured and delighted to attend and mark the completion of the project.
He said: "Today’s opening of the Diamond Public Realm is a testament to what we can achieve through collaborative efforts and community-driven goals. We are committed to creating vibrant spaces that enhance quality of life, attract new visitors, and bring fresh opportunities for local businesses in Castlederg. This space represents not only our town’s historic significance but also a brighter, more connected future."
The regeneration of the Diamond area in Castlederg was funded by the UK Government, with additional support from Derry City and Strabane District Council. The project was delivered in partnership with DFI Roads, DFI Street Lighting, and Translink, ensuring a cohesive development that successfully integrates vital infrastructure enhancements, accessibility, and improved transport connections. Lowry Building & Civil Engineering served as the project’s lead contractor, with GM Design leading the architectural vision that harmonizes the new public space with Castlederg’s historic charm.
The new Diamond Public Realm encompasses an inviting pedestrian-friendly plaza, upgraded lighting, landscaped seating areas, and a range of accessibility improvements. The space has been designed to serve as a gathering hub for residents and visitors alike, featuring areas for community events, public art installations, and green spaces that reflect the natural beauty of the surrounding region.
The Deputy Mayor acknowledging the importance of the investment to the business community and residents of Castlederg paid tribute to everyone involved in successfully securing the funding and delivering the project. He added: “The Diamond area is the heart of Castlederg, and this project ensures that it will continue to thrive for generations to come. This investment would not have been possible without the combined efforts of our dedicated project team, the Council, the business and wider community, who have all contributed to creating a welcoming, functional, and sustainable public space."
The Diamond Public Realm is now open to the public, and community members are invited to explore the space, which is poised to host seasonal events, community gatherings, and local market days.
This project is an integral part of the wider Derg Active Project, which aims to bring lasting socio-economic benefits to Castlederg and the surrounding area.
